Visit the Chessie Trail Today
The Chessie Nature Trail runs along the Maury River from the city of Buena Vista through Rockbridge County to Lexington. It follows the path of the former C&O railroad, which was washed out in 1969 by Hurricane Camille.
The Trail’s total of seven miles easily breaks up into shorter hikes, with multiple entrances along the way. Click here for a map of the Trail. Its level path, shady stretches, smooth gravel, and lovely scenery make it an ideal outing for families.
There is currently one short stretch (hopefully temporary) at the Lexington end where users must detour onto the public road for 200 feet. Other than this area, there are no road crossings.

Birders, geologists, and wildflower lovers frequent the Trail. History buffs, as well as the general public, enjoy viewing the remnants of massive locks and dams left over from the James River and Kanawha Company canal system in the 1800s.
